Indianapolis, Indiana (March 18,2024)-In a world where the landscape of country music is often dominated by pop-infused beats and over-the-top production, Cody Johnson stands out from the rest. With his contemporary country style and story telling lyrics, he continues to push modern boundaries while seamlessly connecting with a new generation of fans. Known for his authenticity and leader within the “back to country” movement in the genre, his Leather Tour not only showcases his incredible talent and music, but also his unwavering commitment to staying true to himself and his legion of COJO Nation supporters. His Friday night performance at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis was filled with raw emotion, soulful lyrics and a genuine connection between Johnson and every person in the sold-out venue.

From the moment Johnson stepped onto the stage, clad in his trademark cowboy hat and worn boots, the crowd erupted into a deafening roar that permeated deep into the upper rafters. There’s something about his unassuming demeanor that immediately connects with the fans – he’s not a flashy superstar; he’s one of them, a true-blue country boy with a guitar and a story to tell. Launching into “Me & My Kind,” from the album Cowboy Like Me,  Johnson wasted no time in showcasing his powerhouse vocals and unwavering love for what he does.

But it wasn’t just Johnson’s musical prowess that captivated the crowd throughout the evening; it was his authenticity. Each song felt like a chapter from his own life – tales of love, heartbreak, and the trials of everyday life in small-town America. When he sang about heartache on his mega-hit “On My Way to You,” the pain could be felt in every note. Conversely, when he belted out the anthemic chorus of “Dear Rodeo,” it was as if he was reliving every moment of his rodeo days right before our eyes.

Throughout the 100 minute set,  Johnson took the time to tell the backstory on songs and to thank those who stood by him throughout his musical journey. He also made it very clear how thankful he was for Warner Music Nashville, sharing that other labels had told him he wouldn’t make it in country music because as he put it, ” he was just a Texas artist playing cowboy music.”  The powers to be a Warner Music let Johnson know that, “We don’t want you to take the hat off, we don’t care where you’re from, you can leave the fiddle. We just want to be a part of this thing that we heard about called the CoJo Nation changing country music,’” Johnson recalled.

“I’ve been working my tail off for the last 18 years. This is not an overnight success,” Johnson said. “To anyone who is chasing a dream, if you want something, don’t wait for somebody to hand it to you. If you want something, go work for it. Here we are tonight 18  years later in a packed house in Indianapolis.” He was also very clear and precise in what he intends to do with his career. “God put me on this earth to make country music sound like country music,” invoking a thunderous roar.

What sets Johnson apart from other country artists is his unwavering commitment to his roots and the music he grew up listening to. In an industry where it’s all too easy to get swept up in trends and gimmicks, Johnson remains true to the traditions of classic country music. When he performed “Dirt Cheap” off his latest album and tour namesake, Leather, the Texas native delivered them with a sincerity that’s impossible to fake along with lyrics that harken back to a time when storytelling was at the heart of the genre. This dedication to authenticity was evident in the way Johnson chose his setlist, which was a mix of fan favorites and deep cuts from his discography. Songs like “Dance Her Home” and “Long Haired Country Boy” thrilled longtime fans, while newer tracks like “Nothin’ On You” and “Work Boots,” showcased Johnson’s growth as a songwriter. Throughout the concert, Johnson paid homage to the legends that have influenced his music, including Merle Haggard and George Strait, demonstrating his deep respect for the roots of country music.

Of course, the highlight of the evening came when Johnson performed his latest chart-topper, “Painter.” The song, a heartfelt tribute to his wife Brandi, struck a chord with fans the moment it was released. When it was performed tonight in the confines of Gainbridge, the emotional resonance felt was palpable. As Johnson poured his heart out on stage, the audience swayed in unison, hanging onto every word as if it were their own personal anthem.`

As the night wore on, Johnson treated the crowd to a mix of old favorites and new hits, each song more electrifying than the last. From the foot-stomping energy of the life changing “‘Til You Can’t,” to the heartfelt balladry of “Human,” he held the audience in the palm of his hand, commanding their attention with every strum of his guitar or every spoken word. If that wasn’t quite genuine enough, a little story about his grandfather followed by a full on performance of “God Bless America,” had every person standing, singing back at the stage in their loudest voice possible, eliminating any lingering doubts.

Just as it seemed the evening couldn’t get any better, Johnson closed out the show with a rousing rendition of his country classic “Diamond in My Pocket” followed by a full house sing-along with a cover the Ed Bruce penned “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up and Be Cowboys.” It was the perfect ending to a perfect night – a reminder that no matter where life takes us, there’s always a bit of magic to be found in real country music, performed in a way the true legends of the genre intended.

As the final notes faded away and lights filled the arena once again, fans moved slowly into the night knowing they had just witnessed something truly special. Cody Johnson isn’t just a country singer; he’s a storyteller, a troubadour, a modern-day cowboy with a guitar and a dream. On Friday night in Indianapolis, he proved once again why he’s one of the most beloved figures in country music and a REAL Country Superstar.
