Ded – Mis•an•thrope – Album Review

Nu Metal band, Ded, is currently out on tour in support of their debut album Mis•an•thrope. Released in July of 2017, the album has spawned many singles including “FMFY”, “Anti-Everything”, “Dead to Me”, “Remember the Enemy”, and the latest single “Hate Me”. Based in Tempe, Arizona, the band includes vocalist Joe Cotela, guitarist David Ludlow, drummer Matt Reinhard, and bassist Kyle Koelsch.

The album features hard-pounding anthems that hit like sledgehammers. Starting it off from the beginning with “Architect”, Ded brings the heat and only offers relief when they break things down once in a while and feature some rap-rock on songs like “Anti-Everything” and “Remember the Enemy”. With detailed musicianship and various vocal stylings, Ded keeps the listener’s attention throughout the album while delivering their onslaught of Nu Metal.

Their current single “Hate Me”, starts off with a narrator stating, “yeah, we don’t want to scare your children, that’s the last thing we wanna do…”, clearly being facetious. As a drum roll gets the song started, a thunderous intro kicks in, making way for a nice breakdown. The peaks and valleys of this song are a perfect way to allow the lyrics to come through at the correct point, as well as denoting correct feeling.

Lyrically “Hate Me” features the common theme of not putting up with people telling you who to be and how to act. The genius is in the lyrics’ delivery. The beginning of the verses is delivered rap-rock style, allowing the rational words to flow through unimpeded. As the verse moves into the conflicting lyrics the vocals switch to in-your-face vocals. The chorus features strong harmonic vocals stating, “Hate Me, Hate Me, You will never break me…” as if they are teasing someone on a playground. The harmonies are almost lost in the anger but come through enough to round out the sound. A song about being rebellious is what Nu Metal stands for.

Mis•an•thrope is a great listen from start to finish, and this group is a force to be reckoned with, in the Nu Metal scene. With five singles released so far from an 11-track album, that says a lot about a promising future for Ded.
