Detroit,Mi (March 22,2019) – Team Joseph, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, hosted its tenth annual Jammin’ for Joseph benefit concert at The Fillmore Detroit on Thursday. Sponsored by 99.5 WYCD, it was a night of fun and optimism featuring American Idol winner and country music superstar Scotty McCreery.

Originally started as a concert fundraiser a decade ago, the annual event has steadily grown with support from great musical talent and local sponsorships. These established entities have helped drive donations with their time and unselfish energy, which allow the increased funding of cutting-edge Duchenne research. The donations from the event provide hope that a possibility of a real treatment may be discovered for the children who currently battle the debilitating disease.

As in past years, country music superstar Scotty McCreery was on hand as the evening’s musical headliner. On tour in support of his career altering 2018 release Seasons Change, the one-hour forty-five minute set featured a mixture of his early hits along with a healthy mix off the new LP. Sure, favorites “Buzzin’” and “Feelin’ It” off of See You Tonight along with “The Trouble With Girls” from Clear As Day, sounded like the Scotty McCreery of old that the fans have come to love,  his new stuff really was the highlight of the show.

With power and a newfound confidence not seen before, McCreerys delivery was strong and vibrant throughout the night. Current radio hit “This is It,” off Seasons Change was silky smooth and charismatic. On  “Boys From Back Home,” the ascending crescendos allowed  McCreery to “stretch his legs” lyrically while the groovy “Barefootin’,” showed an up tempo side that he hasn’t been known for up to now. In fact all eleven cuts McCreery performed off Seasons Change were a different, yet refreshing change from his earlier material. Is it because he has matured as an artist or has his new record label allowed him that freedom and a hand in writing each song?

As the night came to a close, McCreerys musical maturity was readily apparent. Starting the run with fan favorite “See You Tonight”, followed by a beautiful cover of the Garth Brooks classic “If Tomorrow Never Comes” and finally his first number one hit “Five More Minutes,” proved his confidence in his music is real. Need proof ? How many current artists choose to end a performance with a song of their latest release with a catalog of hits as deep as his?

It has been a well-documented five year wait for McCreerys latest release, but based on the fans reaction tonight and current radio air play, it was well worth it. Even though he was dropped from his first label, McCreery has came back with a vengeance and has reestablished himself once again as a budding superstar. Add in his support for Jammin’ for Joseph and his fan appreciation, good things are happening again for Scotty McCreery and we couldn’t be happier for him.

The Inspiration

Joseph Penrod was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy when he was 5 years old.  Although a diagnosis can be overwhelming, and a disease of this magnitude can begin to define a child, Joseph has led the way with a positive attitude and a love of life.

He will not be defined by this disease. Joseph is not only a little boy with Duchenne.  He is a son, a brother, a cousin, a grandson. He is a soccer-player, a snuggler and his dog’s ball thrower. He is a sand-castle building, chocolate-chip-cookie-eating, sledding daredevil.  He is a reader, a dreamer and a hugger. Joseph is a singer, a laugher and a guitar-player. He is funny, charming and compassionate.  He is the best kind of friend.  He the inspiration for our fight. He will not

Hope for Joseph and all the other children with Duchenne is fueled by his positive attitude, a mom on a mission and an army of committed volunteers who will not quit until the day there is a cure.
