The Marcus King Band + North Mississippi Allstars + Bobby Lee Rodgers @ Jannus Live, Saint Petersburg, FL
Saint Petersburg, Florida (March 21, 2019) – On a warm, sunny spring evening in beautiful downtown St. Petersburg, FL, a constant stream of people were making their way into Jannus Live. As the venue filled, the vibe was relaxed, yet excited for a night of great jam bands featuring amazing guitarists. For tonight’s fare includes three of the best, The Marcus King Band, The North Mississippi Allstars, and Bobby Lee Rodgers, on the Carolina Confessions Tour.
With the sun still shining brightly on the open air stage at Jannus Live, Bobby Lee Rogers took to the stage. For those that aren’t familiar with him, he has studied both classical and jazz guitar as well as teaching at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. With this kind of pedigree, you know he has to be good. For sure he didn’t disappoint. His performance was nothing short of amazing. When he performs you can here how he’s combined funk, jazz, rock and the blues into his guitar work. His playing and singing sucked the audience in and it was obvious everyone was really enjoying his performance.

Now it was time for the North Mississippi Allstars to really rev things up. Made up of brothers guitarist Luther and drummer Cody Dickinson along with bassist Carl Dufresne this formidable trio do an amazing job of fusing Mississippi delta blues and rock together. Throughout their performance, Luther Dickinson thrilled the audience with his complete mastery of the guitar. Between his straight up playing and his slide work, everyone in attendance was enthralled. The band moved through their set seamlessly from one song to the next. Every song they played was an expansive jam truly showcasing not only their individual abilities, but how they fuse it altogether into so much more than what they’ve recorded. Towards the end of their set Cody Dickinson took a break from behind the drum kit to show the audience to show off his skills on the washboard and join in with his brother and showing everyone that Luther isn’t the only guitar player in the band.

After they were done, it was time for the Marcus King Band to finish out the night. At just twenty three years old and with a baby face that belies the soul of his voice, and fire in his guitar, his show is one that should never be missed. With a five piece band consisting of drummer Jack Ryan, Stephen Campbell on bass, keyboardist DeShawn Alexander, saxophonist Dean Mitchell, and trumpet/trombonist Justin Johnson he has formed a much more than capable unit to not only showcase his talents but make some amazing music. What music they make! The crowd was eating up everything they were hearing as well as dancing and singing along. Towards the end of their set Luther Dickinson came out to join Marcus King for some of the greatest guitar work everyone in attendance was lucky enough to see.
