With warmer weather finally making an appearance in Michigan, it marks the return of outdoor music events like the Outdoor Summer Concert Series at the Mount Pleasant casino. On this evening, Cody Johnson returns to the Mitten state for a stop along his 2025 Leather Deluxe Tour, bringing along show support artists Carly Pearce and show opener, Jade Eagleson.

Eagleson opens the show with the crowd up on their feet as they are “Shakin’ In Them Boots” while beginning to convert the hillside concert venue into a country music honky-tonk for the evening.  The Canadian raised cowboy comes from a six-generation cattle ranch that chose to opt out of the family business to move to Nashville to pursue a music career.

Performing songs from his third studio album Do It Anyway, Jade and his band add “Worth The Double,” “Do It Anyway” and “Rodeo Queen.”  Eagleson dedicates “She Don’t Know” to his wife, who is back home in Nashville with their two sons.  He concludes his short show set with the song that started it all off for him in 2020, “Got Your Name On It.”

Eagleson is joined on stage with his band mates that includes Ben Miller (bass guitar), Linsey Beckett (fiddle), Chris Bray (guitar), Bradley Cooper (drums) and Kevin (pedal steel).

With darkness now upon the outdoor concert area, it is time for the honky-tonk to open with Cody Johnson ready to take the stage.  As the band begins, Cody climbs up steps to top the rear center of the stage while two spotlights shine down on him.  Coming to front and center, the band picks up the beat as Johnson paces back and forth across the stage getting the crowd ramped up as he introduces the crowd with “That’s Texas.”

With the evening’s temperature around 75 degrees, Cody welcomes the crowd by announcing that “Texas is sitting at 105 degrees today and it feels pretty good in Michigan.  It makes me want to build a house and move here.”  The crowd erupts in cheers, as he sings “Me And My Kind.”

Slowing the tempo down, Cody and the band sing “Dance Her Home,” “How Do You Sleep At Night” and “With You I Am.”  Johnson talks about being out on the road this run with his father, as they prepare to celebrate Father’s Day later this weekend.  He also mentions how he is fortunate to be able to play country music for all the fans.  With most shows being indoors at hockey arenas and theaters, they all look the same and you lose focus on what town or state you are in.  “But being outside with you all tonight, sitting up on the lawn, it sure feels good to be here tonight and play country music.  Thank you for being here and thank you to Jesus for giving me the ability to play country music.”  He continues on asking for crowd participation throughout tonight’s show, starting with “Dear Rodeo.”

For “Nothing On You,” Cody poses for a photo with the crowd with cell phones lighting up the dark sky.  He asks the crowd to sing along as he plays with just an acoustic guitar, like back when he first started…in Texas, singing at rodeos with just a guitar while selling cd’s for $5.00. He then ramps up the band for The Charlie Daniels Band hit, “Long Haired Country Boy.”

Next, Johnson tells of him being told that he would never make it on the radio in Texas. After working hard for a few years, he began being played on radio.  When he moved to Nashville, he was told he and his cowboy hat would never make it in that town.  Today, he has 30+ hits on Texas radio, and he has worked hard enough for Nashville to accept he and his hat and let him perform in front of their “Sold Out” crowd this evening.

He continues by telling the crowd of how this next song is so very special and has a strong meaning to him by treating people like human beings.  “Regardless of how different we all are of each other, not matter what color or religion we are, what God we worship, or how much money we have in the bank…when you boil it all down people, we are all just a bunch of humans trying to figure out this thing we call life together.”  That leads right into the band playing “Human.”

After a night on the bus with some peach moonshine, a guitar, fiddle and banjo, a song was born. The band joins Cody at center stage for a bluegrass jam of the fun song, “Georgia Peaches.”

Asking the crowd if they are still with him and doing good, he sends some love for the ones on the hill with his respectful and appreciative tune, “People In The Back.”

During the performance of his single “I’m Gonna Love You,” his duet partner, Carrie Underwood appears on the large overhead video screen to sing her parts and sends the crowd into a thunderous applause as they sing along also.

Cody next calls for the lights to come up across the venue floor, and pays attention to called out service men and women, and all first responders to offer his support and respect.  The crowd cheers, then begins the chant “U.S.A.”  He proceeds with his rant of all the bullshit going on in this country and world today. Continues with how we should all love and respect our neighbors and everyone in general. We should remember that our country was fought for and to make sure we all live in freedom, by a soldier before us.  He carries on by singing “God Bless America” with the red and white stripes appearing on the video screen.

Johnson introduces each member of the Rockin’ CJB From Texas band as each one shows off a minute to make a band medley.  The members consists of: Jody Bartula (fiddle), Joey Pruski (bass), Harrison Yount (steel guitar), Seth Wilson (piano), Jake Mears (guitar) and Miles Stone (drums).

Cody performs “Dirt Cheap,” before thanking the crowd for making “The Painter” one of his best days ever as it became a number one single. The evening’s set wraps up with his five time platinum hit, “‘Til You Can’t.”

After a brief moment off stage, the crowd cheers and chants Cody’s name to get him to return to the stage for an encore.  Johnson and the band returns to the stage to the crowds delight to finish the evening with his version of The Chicks hit “Travelin’ Soldier” and concludes with “Diamond In My Pocket.”

The show is a complete hit for all in attendance as the crowds are seen dancing and singing to almost every song throughout the evening’s performance. As Cody talks earlier in the evening about working hard to make the industry respect him and listen to him, it has become evident with the ‘SOLD OUT’ show here in Mount Pleasant, MI…country music fans love Cody Johnson and want to hear what Cody Johnson has to say and sing about.  Texas country music is different than what you hear on “country radio” today, but there is still a desire and love for that Texas country sound.  Thanks to Cody Johnson for bringing back the honky-tonks and keeping Texas country alive.
