Gov’t Mule “Dark Side of the Mule Tour” Returns for the Last 18-Date Summer Run of the Legendary Pink Floyd Tribute

Renowned GRAMMY-nominated quartet Gov’t Mule – led by GRAMMY® Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, guitar legend, and producer Warren Haynes – are bringing their Dark Side of the Mule Tour to Detroit on Wednesday, August 2 at Pine Knob Music Theatre with very special guest Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening opening in support of the band’s new studio album, Peace…Like A River, just released June 16th.  The upcoming 18-date summer outing features the return of their extremely rare Pink Floyd tribute, which will follow a full Mule set and mark the final time they’ll perform the acclaimed set. Gov’t Mule first debuted Dark Side of the Mule on Halloween 2008 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, which was recorded and later released as a live album in 2014. Years after, the band brought back the acclaimed set, a favorite with fans and critics alike, for a handful of shows, performing it only 10 times in total. With 2023 marking the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the MoonGov’t Mule is joining in on the celebration of the legendary album and bringing back Dark Side of the Mule for one final time on this summer’s tour.

“Warren Haynes is a meaty and masterful player, as well as a soulful singer and songwriter

– an all-star.”– Rolling Stone

The recently released Peace…Like A River (Fantasy Records), is the band’s 12th studio album and follow-up to Gov’t Mule’s chart-topping, Grammy-nominated blues album, Heavy Load Blues, includes the stirring lead single Dreaming Out Loud featuring Ivan Neville and Ruthie Foster, currently impacting Triple A radio nationwide. For the track, Haynes wove together inspirational quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Robert and John Kennedy, and the late civil rights leader and U.S. Representative John Lewis. Also featured on Peace…Like A River is the soaring and heartfelt “Same As It Ever Was” and the epic, Beatles-inspired new single “Made My Peace.” The 12-song rock collection, already being hailed as “perfection” and “captivating,” also features guest appearances from Billy Bob Thornton, who adds his distinctive vocals to “The River Only Flows One Way,” rising soul artist Celisse on “Just Across The River,” and Billy F Gibbons, whose trademark vocals underscore the tasty ZZ Top textures that inform the humor-infused “Shake Our Way Out.” In addition to various vinyl options, Peace…Like A River is also available with a Deluxe Edition (on CD only) that includes 5 additional tracks.

“Brilliant and never predictable…an effortless combination of blues, soul and classic roots-rock…innovative and commanding.”  American Songwriter

Peace…Like A River was recorded during the same sessions as Heavy Load Blues at The Power Station New England with co-producer John Paterno (Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos) alongside Haynes. The albums, however, were created in different rooms, with no shared gear or instruments, keeping the two concurrent projects with their own unique identity and character. The tracks on Peace…Like A River explore the many sides of Gov’t Mule and bring together all the qualities that have earned the four-piece the beloved stature they enjoy today. Concise songcraft coexists seamlessly with the band’s trademark instrumental journeys. Songs longer than pop convention are somehow still compact: they’re explorative but never meandering; the tunes are at once both wide-ranging and tightly focused. Thematically, the new album explores the seismic changes the world has gone through over the past few years. Influenced both in his songwriting and playing by what Haynes calls “the golden era of rock, soul, jazz and blues,” Gov’t Mule combines the best and most enduring qualities from all those musical strains to create a timeless piece of art on Peace…Like A River that could have easily come out in the 1970s.

[Warren Haynes’] voice, guitar and songs recall the blues and rock of the late ‘60s and ‘70s, yet he presents it all with a modern punch that makes even the most classic tropes and progressions sound contemporary. He’s a treasure, and his new record with Gov’t Mule, Peace … Like A River, provides further proof.” – Ultimate Classic Rock
