Brroklyn,Michigan(July 2024)-The 2024 Faster Horses Festival in Brooklyn, Michigan, lived up to its reputation as “the party of the summer,” delivering a weekend of country music, camping and a barnyard full of unforgettable moments. Nestled in the scenic Irish Hills at the Michigan International Speedway, the festival drew thousands of country music fans looking to experience top-tier performances, lively campgrounds, and the vibrant atmosphere that has made the ACM winning Faster Horses a must-attend event in the summer festival circuit.

The festival kicked off on Friday with a stellar opening day lineup, headlined by the larger-than-life Jelly Roll. Known for his raw and emotional storytelling, Jelly Roll set the tone for the weekend with a performance that was as heartfelt as it was energetic.

What a f— show to be the opening night of,” Jelly Roll said on stage. “This is like home away from home, this is a homecoming show for me here in Michigan.”

Jelly Roll (Jason DeFord) who began his career in the hip-hop genre before crossing over to country music, brought his own flair to the country music festival. In between playing emotional songs like “Son of a Sinner” and “I Am Not Okay,” the CMT award winner covered songs like “Boyz in the Hood” and “Ms Jackson” in a flowing hip-hop mashup. The overflowing country fans reveled in the moment, showing their appreciation to the big man by breaking into a rhythmic “Jelly, Jelly” once it was over.

Before Jelly Roll’s set, the audience was treated to impressive performances from a diverse lineup of artists. Zach Top opened the day with a spirited set that got everyone dancing and excited for what was to come. Jackson Dean followed, captivating the swelling audience with his rich vocals and authentic country sound while performing favorites like “Don’t Come Lookin’” and”Fearless,” that set the perfect backdrop for the beautiful summer evening.

In stark contrast, Tyler Hubbard, one-half of the chart topping Florida Georgia Line, brought his signature flair to the stage, performing solo hits and some beloved Florida Georgia Line classics. His engaging stage presence and catchy tunes like “5 Foot 9” and “Dancin’ in the Country,” which have become anthems in their own right, had the crowd singing along to his every word during his 40-minute performance.

Another artist who rightfully deserves a headline billing of his own, Cody Johnson’s performance was nothing short of electrifying. His traditional country sound and undeniable charisma, the real life rodeo cowboy performed hits like “Til You Can’t,”  “Dirt Cheap” and “The Painter,” much to the delight of sold-out Faster Horses crowd. In a weekend full of stand out performances, Cody Johnson’s was a true country music highlight and might even garner a mention as one of the best real country sets in the 11 year history of the festival.

Saturday’s lineup promised another day of exceptional music and memorable moments. The day was highlighted by Lainey Wilson, the 32-year-old Louisianan who has emerged as one of country music’s most dynamic artists. The reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year took the stage clad in purple and black leather, standing tall on the hood of a pickup truck. Wilson, who faced a potential catastrophic wardrobe malfunction, charged out of the gate with “Hang Tight Honey,” “Straight Up Sideways” and “Smells Like Smoke,” but soon realized she had a problem: She’d split her pants!

Slipping backstage, microphone in hand and still addressing the massive crowd out front, Wilson asked the crowd to give her a minute for a wardrobe change.“Y’all just about got a real show!” she said.

Despite the unexpected mishap, Wilson delivered a powerhouse performance that showcased her dynamic voice and captivating stage presence. Her hit “Things a Man Oughta Know” had the entire audience singing along, proving that nothing could dampen the festival spirit.

Old Dominion, which also could likely have commanded a headlining spot of its own, preceded Wilson with a polished 75-minute set confirming that what the group lacks in gritty authenticity, it compensates with a barrelful of radio-ready hooks The chiming “Make It Sweet” kicked off a set full of Southern-accented pop,“No Hard Feelings,” “I Should Have Married You,” “Snapback” mixed with rock-laced fare (“Never Be Sorry”) and covers of hits from Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney.

A late-afternoon set from veteran quintet Sawyer Brown offered a rare touch of old-school country-pop on a Faster Horses bill dominated by younger acts and breaking artists. The band, currently amid a 40th anniversary tour, lined its set with songs from its own prolific  catalog performing hits  “Some Girls Do” and “The Race Is On, along with a riviting tribute to contemporaries Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the late Toby Keith.

Shane Smith & The Saints added a touch of Americana and roots music to the day, performing with a raw intensity that seemed to resonate with their growing fan base. Their soulful lyrics and intricate musicianship provided a refreshing contrast to the more mainstream acts and made for an impressive early day performance on the main stage, marked by driving fiddle from Bennett Brown and rich baritone vocals from bandleader Smith.

As the festival entered its final day, anticipation built for the closing headliner, Hardy. Known for his gritty lyrics and rock-infused country sound, Hardy took the stage at 9:45 PM, delivering a performance that was nothing short of explosive. His setlist included crowd-pleasers like “Jack,”  “Give Heaven Some Hell” and a potent take on “Truck Bed,”  all enhanced by Hardy’s dynamic stage presence, kept the energy flowing and his REAL fans in place until the very end of the night. Unfortunately, Hardy’s over-the-top set wasn’t for everybody though as seen by the stream of fans leaving early before his set concluded. It could have been a late Sunday night, the rock-infused cuts that permeated the setlist or the ill timed “Throw your beers” that had full and empty cans being launched towards the stage causing the exodus, but traditional country fans were not pleased. Overall, Hardy’s performance as the closing act to Faster Horses 2024 was just as expected from the majority; a sizzling performance highlighted by massive hits and select covers that featured some of the best modern country music party atmosphere that could be found at any festival, no matter the genre.

Before Hardy’s show-stopping performance, the crowd was treated to a series of standout Sunday performances. Tigirlily Gold kicked off the day with their harmonious vocals and infectious energy highlighted by cuts off their upcoming album. Their performance was followed by Ashley Cooke, whose emotive storytelling and soulful voice captivated the audience, leaving a lasting impression and gaining a plethora of new fans along the way.

Kip Moore, filling in for Ernest, brought his signature sound and rugged charm to the stage. Hits like “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck” and “Beer Money” had the audience singing along, reveling in the feel-good vibes of Moore’s performance. Despite being a last-minute addition, Moore seamlessly fit into the lineup, delivering one of the weekend’s most memorable sets.

Budding superstar Riley Green continued the momentum with his traditional country sound and engaging performance and style. Songs like “There Was This Girl” and “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom sang along word for word, creating a heartfelt and communal atmosphere.

Beyond the incredible music, the Faster Horses Festival offered an array of experiences that made it truly unique. The campgrounds buzzed with life as festival-goers set up elaborate campsites, complete with themed decorations and activities. The sense of community was palpable, with strangers becoming friends over shared interests and the love of country music.

Throughout the weekend, festival attendees had access to a variety of food and drink options, showcasing local vendors and culinary delights. From classic festival fare to gourmet treats, there was something to satisfy every palate. The Ferris wheel provided stunning views of the festival grounds, offering a moment of respite and reflection amidst the excitement. With safety a high priority, the festival’s commitment was evident with ample staff and medical personnel hand to ensure a smooth experience for all attendees. Despite the large crowds, the atmosphere remained friendly and welcoming, with everyone united by their love for music and the festival spirit.

The 2024 Faster Horses Festival once again proved why it is hailed as “the party of the summer.” With its exceptional lineup, vibrant atmosphere, and sense of community, the festival once again delivered an unforgettable experience for all who attended. From the heartfelt performances of all the artists to the joyous camaraderie, Faster Horses captured the essence of what makes music festivals so special.

As the final notes rang out and the crowd dispersed, there was a sense of fulfillment and nostalgia, with memories that will last long after the summer sun has set. For those who experienced it, the Faster Horses Festival was not just an event; it was a celebration of music, friendship, and the enduring spirit of country music.
