Sum 41 + Assuming We Survive at The Shelter, Detroit, MI

Detroit, Michigan (May 25, 2019)– It was a busy Memorial Day weekend in Detroit. Just a few blocks away at from tonight’s show was Day 1 of the Movement Music Festival, but St. Andrew’s Hall and the Shelter hosted a different kind of music show. Pop punk legends Sum 41 brought the ‘No Personal Space’ tour to Detroit, bringing along with them Southern California natives Assuming We Survive.

As I entered The Shelter shortly after the doors opened, I noticed the standing room would quickly be at a premium for this sold out show. The tour, appropriately named ‘No Personal Space’ tour was aimed to provide a more intimate feel. Over the years I have gotten used to seeing Sum 41 playing bigger venues such as the Crofoot, one of the main stages at Warped Tour and even arenas. This tour brought Sum 41 back to their roots when they were just an up and coming band twenty years ago.

The band Assuming We Survive opened up the show and immediately had the crowd going nuts as their walk-on song was the theme song to the wildly popular Game of Thrones. Pure energy is what I could describe their set as their pop-punk melodies and hardcore breakdowns sent everyone into a frenzy. Not many people in the crowd, including myself, knew who Assuming We Survive was, but after tonight they will not forget. They are Easycore at its finest and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for their music.

Now for the band the sold out crowd has been waiting for. Sum 41 rushed on the stage and right away opened their set with one of their old hit songs “Motivation.” The band engaged the crowd early and often with each of them stepping up to the high rise, high-fiving and singing along with the fans. Their set included a bunch of old favorites including “Walking Disaster” and “The Hell Song” and new songs up their upcoming album “Order In Decline.” As always, Sum 41 covered classic metal songs form bands that influenced them mid-set. Tonight it was Metallica as they strung a medley together that included “From Whom The Bell Tolls,” “Enter Sandman,” and “Master of Puppets.” After closing out their set, they came back on stage to play two songs for their encore including their biggest hit “Fat Lip” and a song I never thought I’d ever hear them play live again “Machine Gun” from their first full length album “Half Hour of Power”

Sum 41 first played at The Shelter as a headliner 19 years ago. Since then they have enjoyed two decades of success playing sold out arenas and countless tours around the world. Seeing them play this show in a humble venue like this again takes me back to when I first discovered Sum 41 back when I was in 7th grade. I wasn’t old enough to go see Sum 41 back then (Thanks, Mom & Dad) so this show to me was 19 years in the making. Vocalist Deryck Whibley announced that Sum 41 was planning a tour in support of their new album “Order In Decline” this fall. As the night came to a close, fans left happy knowing one of their favorite bands will be returning soon.
