DETROIT, MICHIGAN – Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Cooper Webb delivered a statement win at Round 6 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship at Ford Field Saturday night. In front of a packed stadium, Webb secured his first victory of the season, vaulting himself into a points tie for the championship lead just six races into the 17-round championship series.

450SX Class: Webb Times His Attack to Perfection

Suzuki’s Ken Roczen was the first to seize control, grabbing the lead from Holeshot winner Aaron Plessinger and leading the field for much of the 20-minute-plus-one-lap Main Event. However, Webb was in close pursuit, biding his time before launching a late-race charge.

It was a battle of tenths of seconds and the little pace lost by Roczen when he attempted to get through traffic was just enough to allow Webb to power by in the loamy sand section, grabbing the lead.

“I really liked where I was by lap three when I got around Aaron [Plessinger] and was with Kenny,” Webb said after the race. “I knew he was riding well today, so it was going to be a good pace, and we had some good laps. It was a tough Main Event. I’ve been in that position before, and it felt great. I’m stoked to get that first win and get the red plate.”

Roczen defended his line brilliantly for most of the race, but Webb’s patience and controlled riding paid off in the final minutes. The Yamaha rider pounced in the closing laps, stealing the lead and holding off Roczen late to take the checkered flag.

Roczen finished a close second after an impressive performance, rebounding strongly from a crash the previous weekend.

“I knew it was going to be a battle all the way to the checkered flag, and I just gave it everything I could,” Roczen said. “Sometimes it’s better to be in second in those situations. I gave it everything I had and didn’t let anything confuse me or trip me out. It’s a great rebound from last weekend, even though we only made up two points. This season is still long, and as long as I’m still in it and battling, I’m happy.”

Sexton’s Gritty Comeback Keeps Him in the Hunt

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Chase Sexton had a nightmare start, getting stuck in the gate and then crashing on the opening lap. However, Sexton’s response was nothing short of spectacular. He blitzed through the field, setting the fastest lap of the race and making crucial passes to secure a third-place finish.

“I think I made the most time up in the whoops,” Sexton said. “That’s the best I’ve hit the whoops on a 450 since I started racing in this class. Even though it wasn’t a win, it was the best I could do tonight.”

With his podium finish, Sexton retains the red plate but now shares the championship lead with Webb, setting the stage for a season long title fight.

Last week’s winner, Malcolm Stewart, finished fourth after passing a downed Anderson late in the race. “[I] just settled into a groove in the main event in fifth place,” Stewart said. “Then I think Jason [Anderson] went down with a few laps to go and we got fourth, so all-in-all, I’m happy. I’m really motivated by this, to back up Tampa with a solid finish inside the top-five is great, now we want more podiums!

”Webb’s Star Racing Yamaha teammate, Justin Cooper, rounded out the top five less than a second behind Stewart. “It was a good race, and I kept going strong,” Cooper said. “I was around fifth or sixth and in a battle the whole time with Malcolm and Jason [Anderson]. Jason had a crash at the end, and I moved up to fifth. I had one moment with a lapper in the sand and lost a lot of time on Malcolm, and had to re-catch him. I almost got to him there at the end. I got to his rear wheel again, but he was riding well, and I really couldn’t make a pass stick. So, fifth on the night and another top-five finish.”

There was a little more on the line in Detroit as fans were aware three of the Monster Energy Supercross series superstars as Jett Lawrence, Eli Tomac, and Hunter Lawrence fell to injury in the past two weeks. That means the remainder of the field is hungrier than ever to step up and take on the mantle of the 2025 leader.

250SX East Class: Kitchen Capitalizes on Late Restart

The 250SX Class delivered its own brand of drama. Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Levi Kitchen claimed victory after a late-race red flag caused by a scary crash by Cameron McAdoo reset the field and erasing a comfortable lead for Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Max Anstie.

“It was a really fun race… I kept my cool the whole time even though he was revving behind me. I didn’t let anything faze me,” Kitchen said. “I was totally settled into second, but after the restart, I knew I had a chance.”

Prior to the red flag, Anstie appeared to have the race under control, leading comfortably. However, the staggered restart—implemented under a new AMA rule for this season—eliminated his gap and gave Kitchen a golden opportunity. Kitchen made an aggressive pass through the loamy sand section and sprinted to the finish line, taking his first win of the season.

Anstie was visibly frustrated after the race but on a positive note, still holds the red plate in the championship standings with a nine-point lead.

“They gave me two opportunities where if I was a little more aggressive, I probably could’ve taken that win,” said Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s RJ Hampshire, who finished third. “But I settled into third and we’ll keep building.”

Fourth-place Tom Vialle and Nate Thrasher rounded out the top five.
