The album opens with the title track, ‘Christmas is Here’. This jazzy, melodic holiday tune is sure to become one of the new classics. Lucas sings with smooth sweetness as the songs light piano and drum beats carry the tune. This song as a whole will leave you with that warm holiday glow. ‘Christmas in Our Town’ continues the holiday journey as Hoge tells a beautifully twangy tale of what makes Christmas so wonderful. This blends perfectly with the next track, ‘White Christmas’; set to melodic piano and a jazzy hi-hat, Lucas puts his own spin on this eternal Christmas classic. ‘Christmas Medley’ takes us through an array of traditional Christmas Carols/Hymns; beginning with a somber, yet resonant take on ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’, Lucas’ baritone voice is the main star. Next pace picks up for a brief journey through ‘We Three Kings’. Suddenly you find yourself redirected to a jazzy version of ‘My Favorite Things’. Finally, the melody is ended in an upbeat, guitar-rich ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’, with touches of each of the melodies arrays. Track 5 is a beautifully traditional rendition of ‘Silent Night’. Hoge’s melodic, sweet voice flows to the tune with an almost lullaby feel. ‘It Wasn’t His Child’ tells Joseph’s story- my new favorite counterpart to Amy Grant’s “Breath of Heaven (Mary’s Song),” all set to the harmony of beautiful guitar and violin. In this song, Hoge brings light to a familiar, but not so often told, tale. ‘Ho Ho Home For The Holidays’ is a merry tale of holiday anticipation that focuses on the importance of spending the holidays with those we love most. Set to a mellow, yet jazzy combination of guitar and piano, this tune is my new “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.” ‘Without Christ in Christmas’ takes me to thoughts of my childhood. Spinning images of gifts, tree decorating, Frosty, and Rudolph (which are all fine and wonderful memories to have), but with deeper meaning, the song serves as an excellent reminder of what the meaning of the season truly is. ‘X-Mas is not CHRISTmas’ and Jesus is the reason for the season. As the album nears its end, Lucas pours out a traditionally acoustic version of ‘The Christmas Song’ as smooth as eggnog. As the album’s finale, the bubbly ‘Baby’s Got a Present’ makes it way to what could easily be a new Christmas favorite. Depicting the excitement of waiting for Christmas day to arrive, but in a cute “adult” sort of way, Lucas sings of waiting to see what “his baby” will have as she waits for him under the tree. With this flirty mix of guitar, piano, and drums, it isn’t too difficult to gather what “gift” Lucas is hinting at.
And there you have it. No sooner have you finished the album, and you are going back to track 1 and starting all over again (or maybe starting with your select favorites). Why not? The holidays are upon us, and what better way to get into the Christmas spirit.
Christmas Is Here was recently included in Parade’s 12 New Holiday Music Albums! Hoge’s music video for “Home For The Holidays” is also airing on GAC, Heartland and The Country Network this season.
