Mike Shinoda + Don Broco at The Ritz Ybor

Tampa, Florida (October 19, 2018)

As rain was starting to fall on the crowd lined up outside the Ritz Theater in Ybor City, Tampa FL. it did nothing to dampen the mood of the crowd that was eager to see Mike Shinoda. Not only did the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour bring Mike Shinoda, it also brought new comers to the United States, Don Broco. With this combination of talent taking the same stage, it promised to be a highly entertaining night of music.
Hailing from Bedford, England, Don Broco has been together for over ten years now. With three albums under their belt and several EP’s as well, they are well known in the UK. With the switch of record labels to Sharptone, and with it support outside of the UK, they finally had the help to bring their sound to America. The band is made up of lead vocalist Rob Damiani, guitarist Simon Delany, drummer Matt Donnelly, and bassist Tom Doyle. They opened their performance with “Everybody” from their latest album Technology. What a great way to introduce yourself to a new audience! They sounded great and played with tons of energy. Next up they played “Automatic” from the album of the same title. Jumping back to the Technology album they dove into “Stay Ignorant”. It was obvious these guys were enjoying their time playing for a whole new audience. As the night continued, they played “Pretty”, “Nerve”, “Come Out To LA”. With the final song of the night, lead singer Rob Damiani told a funny story of going out with friends and winding up having to take off his t-shirt and twirling it then throwing it. This was a fun intro to “T-Shirt Song”. The experience these guys have built up in the UK shined brightly tonight. Between the great performance and the well-crafted songs, they should do very well for themselves on this side of the pond.

Now it was time for Mike Shinoda to take to the stage. For the few that aren’t familiar with his name, he is one of the co-founders of Linkin Park. As many already know he was the primary song writer, rhythm guitarist, producer, keyboardist, and vocalist as well for them. In addition to this he also had a side project that was hip hop driven called Fort Minor. With the untimely passing of Chester Bennington, Mike released his debut album Post Traumatic, which contained songs dealing with his feelings about the suicide of Chester Bennington. Opening up his performance was “Welcome” from his Fort Minor project. Prowling the stage while performing the crowd was instantly energized by him. Next up was “I.O.U.” from Post Traumatic. The first Linkin Park song to be played was “When They Come For Me”. This definitely kept up the hip-hop feel of the show. When it came time to play the Linkin Park song “Roads Untraveled” Mike took to the keyboards and sang a beautiful version. The highlight of the show was when it came time to play the Linkin Park mega hit “In The End”. When Mike Shinoda introduced this song, he said that tonight was a celebration of those that came into our lives, and when he plays this song he asks the audience to sing Chester’s part. With that he started playing the piano introduction, then the audience came in and beautifully sang the whole song. This could have easily been a sad moment, but it was more of a moment that allowed everyone to take joy in the music that Chester Bennington helped to create. The final song of the night was “Running From My Shadow” off Post Traumatic. During this song to the delight of the audience he jumped off stage and leaned over the rail to sing with the audience.

What a great night of music Don Broco and Mike Shinoda provided. With Don Broco bringing their alternative-rock style to the stage and to an entirely new audience. They are just beginning to make their foray into the United States. With shows like tonight’s effort, it won’t be long before they are well known and headlining their own tours here in the States. While Mike Shinoda’s show could have been a sad affair, the joy that Mike brought to the stage made sure that everyone was able to enjoy the new material that he has created while celebrating all the accomplishments of Linkin Park. If this tour comes anywhere near you, get a ticket and enjoy yourself!
