Kicking off the night, SDoT took the stage. The rapper also known as Dotarachi from Chicago, IL knew exactly how to get the crowd ready for the performances to come. His set was followed by the 21 year-old rapper Rod Wave from St. Petersburg, FL. With an already energetic crowd, Rod Waves set just added to the excitement in the room.
Up next to the stage, YK Osiris also known as Osiris Williams. YK first began to gain attention in 2018 after the release of his single “Valentine“. He then released his single “Worth it” in February of this year debuting at number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100, and in October, he released his debut album, The Golden Child. The 21 year-old had an energy that was incomparable to any other and had the crowd hooked through his entire set. He included hit song “Worth it” and some fan favorites “Ride” and “Closer” featuring Jah Vinci.
Taking the stage next is the man everyone has been waiting for, Kevin Gates. Gates fame began back in 2008 after he released his debut mixtape, Pick Of Da Litter, and the hit single “Get in the Way” featuring Lil Boosie. After the success from the single, he was incarcerated until 2011. He then founded his own record label with his wife Dreka called the Bread Winners’ Association. In 2013, he released his album Luca Brasi Story which received praise from a number of different magazines including Rolling Stone where it was placed at number 13 on their top 20 Hip-Hop albums of 2013 list. Later in July, 2013, he released another album, Stranger Than Fiction, featuring artists such as Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa. In support of the mixtape, Gates went on a 4-week tour around the US in October, 2013. Once he finished the tour, he found himself back in prison for parole violations serving 3 and a half months. He released his next mixtape in March, 2014 felting artists like 2 Chainz and made it to number 17 on the Billboard 200 chart. He released his 13th mixtape, Luca Brasi 2, in 2014 earning his third Billboard 200 listing, and peaking at number 38. The mixtape features the single “I Don’t Get Tired” which became Gates’ first song to be certified Gold and make the US Billboard Hot 100. He released his third installment of the Luca Brasi series, Luca Brasi 3, in May, 2015. In July, 2015 he released “Kno One”, the first song from his debut studio album, Islah. On January 29, 2016 he released the album containing two of his most popular songs to date “Really Really” and “2 Phones”. He was convicted of a battery charge in October, 2016 where he was sentenced to 180 days in jail, and sentenced to a 30-month prison term in 2017 for gun charges from an incident in 2013. Since being released on parole in January of this year, he has turned his life around physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. On September 27, 2019 he released his second ever album I’m Him. After seeing tonight performance, it is clear why people buy tickets to see his show. From the energy he radiated through the crowd to the every person dancing and singing along, the night was a success. His set included songs from new to old like “2 Phones” from the album Islah, and some from his new album, I’m Him, like “By My Lonely” and “Fatal Attraction”.
