Chase Rice + Wight Lighters @ Criterion, Oklahoma City, OK

Oklahoma City, OK (November 30, 2018)– Fans attending the Wight Lighters+ Chase Rice show on Friday night were treated with a special pre-show from Mother Nature, complete with flashing lightning and downpours, as fans hurried to escape the deluge and crowded into the venue.  The Criterion is located within the popular Bricktown district of Oklahoma City and is nestled among hotels, shops and restaurants. Although the show at The Criterion wasn’t sold out, there was a good crowd, with fans ranging from young girls to older couples.

Local band, the Wight Lighters, based out of Norman, Oklahoma opened the show for Chase Rice.  The band is made up of Dwight Hamlin on lead guitar and vocals, Joniel Prouty on drums and Derek Carothers on bass. Joining them on this evening was Isaac Stalling on electric guitar.  The Wight Lighters can’t be classified in a single genre, they’re part rock, part blues and all around talented. Dwight Hamlin’s soulful, blues tinged voice drew in the crowd from the moment the band started playing “Easy Money” to the very last note of “Long Way”.  Rounding out the rest of the set were the songs “Ain’t No Good” a hard rocking song with a driving beat, a fantastic cover of Bonnie Raitt’s, “I Can’t Make You Love Me “, Time Ain’t On My Side”,  and my favorite of the night, ” It’s Alright”. “It’s Alright” has all the makings of a power ballad, without any of the cheese.  Soaring vocals and great guitar work make it a song you’ll have stuck in your head for days.  I can’t imagine this band will continue to be opening shows for much longer. They’re a skilled group of musicians and Hamlin’s vocals are a definite highlight.

The Wight Lighters regularly tour within the region, if you’re unfamiliar with them, do yourself a favor and check them out. You won’t be disappointed. You can find their upcoming tour schedule here: https://wightlighters.com/

After a brief set changeover, with lights dim and his backup band silhouetted in the background, sporting a flannel shirt, ripped jeans, and a baseball cap, headliner Chase Rice took the stage with the song “Lions” off his newest album, Lambs & Lions, released at the end of the 2017. Rice makes use of the entire stage, pacing the front of the stage from side to side, walking down the catwalk into the crowd to bump fists, point out signs that get his attention and to slap hands of the fans crowding the stage to touch him.  To be honest, I didn’t know much about Chase Rice going into this show. Many of you might know him from this time spent on Survivor, but not being a reality television fan, I wasn’t aware of that connection. Touching on the fact he was a first a songwriter when he moved to Nashville, he mentioned wondering if he could make a living doing it.  Rice’s co-write of the song , “Cruise” made famous by duo, Florida George Line, set those wheels in motion.  The set was a good mix of Rice’s albums Lambs & Lions and Ignite the Night, with songs like “Carolina Can” a song about Rice’s hometown in North Carolina, “Everybody We Know Does” and “Jack Daniels Showed Up”, which turned out to be a crowd favorite.  Much of the set was uptempo with Rice and his band jamming out, often at the front of the catwalk, but Chase brought it down a notch with the slower tempo of “3 Chords and the Truth”. Switching back and forth between his guitar and simply singing his songs, Chase Rice knows how to work his crowd. His well-crafted interactions, kept the crowd engaged throughout the set. Bringing an audience member on stage to listen to him sing the slightly scandalous song, “Ride” met the approval of the ladies in the audience, who likely wished it was them receiving the personal attention from Rice on stage.

You can catch Chase Rice and his talented band on tour throughout the United States until early March, before they head to Europe to tour.
