Common Ground Music Festival 2019

June 27-30, 2019 (Lansing, MI)- From good food and a hammock hangout to an incredible music lineup ranging from folk to rap, Common Ground‘s 20th year was a complete success, despite the heat. The festival, taking place at Adado Riverfront Park in Lansing, Michigan, is set up with two stages on opposite sides of the park allowing double the artists each night.

The festival kicked off Thursday, June 27th with a number of acoustic and folk performances, beginning with a few local and up-and-coming artists such as Ali McManus and Arlo McKinley & the Lonesome Sound on the Auto Value main stage, and the bands Motherfolk, Mike Mains & the Branches, and Robert Randolph & the Family Band at the Sparrow Stage. As the night proceeded, more and more fans arrived to see some of their favorite artists like City and Colour and the headliner for the night, three time grammy award winner, Brandi Carlile.
As day two came around, the crowd changed drastically from an acoustic loving group to a group of EDM and pop fans. The night started with Cookn on the main stage and Juliana Hale taking the Sparrow Stage. Around 5:30 Carlie Hanson took the main stage where the bulk of people began to crowd in anticipation. Once her performance ended, Jack Harlow began his set across the park at the Sparrow Stage where a number of fans began bouncing back and forth to get a taste of all artists. Next up, Playboi Carti took over the main stage. Although he was late, he did not disappoint. Next up was Yung Gravy where the crowd didn’t fail to run and see, packing in as close as they could to the stage. Next up was the headliner of the night, Zedd. From smoke and fog to fireworks and fire, he gave the crowd a show to remember. By playing some of the most popular songs in pop music today, the crowd was absolutely wild in the best way possible. After a performance with so much energy, the momentum continued, everyone headed over to the Sparrow Stage for the after party with EDM artist Elepante where the party continued until midnight.
Now day three has come around and the country music loving fans have arrived. The day started with Eric Chesser getting the crowd ready at the Auto Value main stage for his first performance of the night, then Clare Dunn followed. Over at the Sparrow Stage The Swift Brothers got things started then Rachel Curtis took over next. At 7 o’clock the rush began with Chris Janson taking over main stage for an energetic performance the crowd ate up. Once his performance ended the fans ran over to see country music icon Tracy Lawrence live at the next stage for an hour of his classics. Once he finished his set the crowd ran back over the the main stage for the headliner of the night, Cole Swindell for an hour and a half of his biggest hits and most loved songs. With a still energetic crowd, Eric Chesser took over the Sparrow stage for his second set of the night.
We have reached Sunday, the final and busiest day of the festival. The night started with some amazing local talent by artist like Sway Boi, Hitman ft. Klav, and Kelsey Lynn. Next at the Sparrow Stage, 2 Live Crew took over hyping up everyone for the final performances of the festival. At 7:30 the crowd was beyond excited for A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie to take the stage. Once his DJ came out to start the set there was no quieting the crowd the rest of the night. His performance left everyone in awe and wanting more. Next up Big Boi took over Sparrow stage allowing the crowd to dance as much as they desired before the final performance. Once 9:45 rolled around YGs DJ took the stage to make sure everyone was ready for what was to come. YG took over the main stage and was the perfect way to wrap up the entire festival. With an energy like no other, he knew just how to work the crowd and make every person have the time of their lives.
Common Ground is a music festival unlike any other. There are four nights in total with a different genre each day so everyone gets a little taste of what they like. You also have the choice whether or not you want to buy a four day pass or just a single day pass to see only the people you are interested in. Along with the music, Common Ground has a line of food trucks with everything from wood fired pizza and rolled ice cream to vegan grilled cheese and barbecue. They also set up an area with a number of hammocks to relax in after a long day of fun. Another part of the festival that they have included in recent years is Colours Couture, the traveling tattoo show that brings together the best tattoo and body piercing artists around the country to perform their art live and showcase their talents.
Overall, the 20th year of the festival was not one that anyone would want to miss. From seeing some of the current biggest names in music live to being introduced to new emerging talent in all genres, the festival allows you to experience something you can’t find anywhere else.
