Los Angeles, California (March 11, 2019) – It’s a brisk evening by Los Angeles standards, but inside the Troubadour things are already heating up. Cherry Glazerr and Palehound have been playing sold out show after sold out show across North America for the past month, and tonight is no different. Tickets for tonight went so quickly that a second date was added; tickets for the additional show were bought out just as fast. Cherry Glazerr have been LA’s hometown indie rock darlings for several years, but there are fans in the crowd who drove in from out of state for the show, as well, and they’re all eager for the music to begin.
On the intimate stage stands Palehound, made up of frontwoman Ellen Kempner, bassist Jesse Weiss, and drummer Larz Brogan. Kempner stands half hidden in the shadows as she sings and strums her guitar. She confides in the audience that her father sent her a barrage of text messages earlier in the day, listing off all of his favorite musicians who have played at the Troubadour. It’s unspoken, but she seems pleased to be counted among those artists. Kempner’s intimate lyrics and half whispered delivery draws the crowd in close, before she and Weiss shred climatically on their instruments, elevating the energy in the room.
Several songs in to the set, Kempner looks around the nearly full room with a start. “Wow, there’s so many more of you now! I had my eye closed that whole song.” Palehound plays two new songs, which will be released on their next album. They close out their performance with a few more tracks of off A Place I’ll Always Go, and say they hope to see everyone again in the fall; Palehound will be supporting Big Thief on their upcoming North American tour.
The crowd bubbles with excitement as stage hands move the mic stand front and center and inflate a giant rubber pair of cherries to set the mood onstage. Cherry Glazerr descend the stairs from backstage, stepping confidently on stage. Clementine Creevy shoulders her guitar and takes her place at the microphone as Devin O’Brien picks up his bass and Tabor Allen takes a seat at the drums. Creevy hums the first high notes of “Ohio,” the opening track of the recently released Stuffed & Ready, and the audience erupts in cheers. “This is my favorite song to play live,” she confides, as an introduction to “Self Explained,” another track off Stuffed and Ready.
The room is warm and hazy, a combination of hidden smoke machines and contraband snuck in by the crowd. It’s a fitting backdrop for Cherry Glazerr. The fuzzy, omnipresent guitars and Clementine’s vocals – which range from a sweetly melodic, whispering falsetto to a frustrated shout, punctuating chorus and verse alike – mix in the foggy air above the crowd. The constant motion of the crowd looks like rough waters, and Clementine eventually grabs her microphone from the stand and jumps in to join the fray. She sings and circles through the audience, before making her way back to strut around on stage.
The energy is high throughout the night, the trio onstage feeding off of the energy of the crowd. “Thank you so much, it’s so good to be home,” Creevy says in response to a round of applause. She reaches out to grasp hands in the crowd, then falls to her knees mid-song; later she pretends to whip O’Brien with her microphone cable as he plays bass from the stage floor. Cherry Glazerr thrashes through “Sip O’ Poison” off of 2017’s Apocalipstick, before disappearing backstage; the room pleads for their return. In the rafters, a previously unseen disco ball blasts out dizzying beams of light to welcome the band back on stage; it’s soon apparent why this bit of lighting was held in reserve for this moment. Cherry Glazerr is covering LCD Soundsystem’s “Time to Get Away,” and the sparkling silver addition to the ambience is a nod to LCD’s signature oversized disco ball set piece. The set concludes with fan favorite “Told You I’d Be With The Guys,” and nearly the entire room throws their arms in the air, clapping and throwing rock fists.
A final round of cheers and applause send Cherry Glazerr off in to the shadows of the Troubadour. The crowd disperses up and down Santa Monica Boulevard, chatting happily about the show, deciding whether to have a post-concert drink. In less than 24 hours, Cherry Glazerr and Palehound will be back on stage entertaining another sold out house of appreciative fans – a fitting conclusion to a wildly successful tour.
